Ad Hoc Work Group

At a two-year assessment of where BARHII has come, the group generally agreed that our work on Internal Capacity and our committees on data, community and built environment are important, but not sufficient. Particularly in light of our social gradient analysis, which shows that life expectancy varies with inequalities in income and wealth, race/ethnicity and key indicators of mobility such as education and home ownership, we must figure out not only how to focus our attention thoughtfully on the social determinants of health but also on the role public health departments can play to influence them.

Accordingly, BARHII has established an ad hoc work group to propose a focus and structure for addressing social determinants of health, which will be presented for consideration to the group as a whole. We will carry out this work in part with colleagues from Los Angeles and Shasta counties through contracts with the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) and its Health Equity Leadership Team.
