Milestones

• BARHII is formally established (March 2002)

• BARHII hosts its first regional forum entitled Food, Health and Justice (March 2003)

• Mobilized local governments to oppose among to Proposition 54, a ballot initiative that would have barred collection of data related to race and ethnicity, virtually eliminating the ability to document health inequities (November, 2003)

• BARHII recognized as a Promising Practice in the NACHHO Model Practices Award Program for 2004 (July 2004)

• All BARHII health departments obtained support from their respective boards of supervisors to support legislation improving school nutrition standards in (June, 2004)

• BARHII representatives met with Bay Area foundations to secure a commitment to fund basic infrastructure (June, 2004)

• Infrastructure grants awarded by the San Francisco Foundation, Peninsula Community Foundation and East Bay Community Foundation (effective July, 2004)

• Grant award from The California Endowment for three years to provide operational support (effective August, 2004)

• Internal Capacity Committee Launched (November, 2004)

• BARHII general membership participated in a training on institutional racism facilitated by Melanie Tervalon MD, MPH (June, 2005)

• Training for BARHII general membership on Advancing Social Justice through Dialogue based on experiences in Ingham County, Michigan, facilitated by Doak Bloss. (June, 2005)

• BARHII hired its first full-time staff person (October, 2005)

• Practice Committee launched (October, 2005)

• Training on Advancing Social Justice through Dialogue provided to over 60 BARHII health department staff (November, 2005)

• NACCHO Social Justice Committee meets with BARHII (November, 2005)

• Presentation by Land Use and Health Program to general BARHII membership launches work on the built environment (January, 2006)

• Technology of Participation Training for BARHII health department staff : select staff members are trained in the facilitation methods presented by Doak Bloss in previous workshop (February, 2006)

• School Health Forum, co-sponsored with Bay Area Nutrition and Physical Activity Collaborative (March, 2006)

• Evaluating Community Capacity Building Conference, co-sponsored by BARHII, University of California, Berkeley Center for Public Health Practice and Pacific Public Health Training Center (March, 2006)

• Practice Committee launches Data Work Group (April, 2006)

• Practice Committee develops and implements Public Health and Land Use 101 Seminar—a regional training on the public health implications of land use and transportation planning decisions (May, 2006)

• Practice Committee launches Built Environment Work Group (July, 2006)

• BARHII initiates partnership with Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) Steering Committee to address Built Environment concerns (July, 2006)

• Joint meeting of Bay Area Planning Directors Association (BAPDA) and BARHII brings together over 100 city and county planners and public health officials to discuss the health implications of planning decisions (December, 2006)

• BARHII forum on community engagement and capacity building brings together 80 staff from bay area health departments (January, 2007)
